About the Event
As February is Heart Month, Founder's Day celebrations will feature speaker presentations from Santina Beaton-MacEachern on heart health, and the Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (GWBI) Nuns.
Santina Beaton-MacEachern is the Manager of Events and Membership with Farm & Food Care PEI with the PEI Federation of Agriculture. She grew up on a family farm, playing sports and riding horses without any indication of heart disease. At 28-years-old on November 7, 2020, Santina had a heart attack and was brought to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Charlottetown by ambulance. She spent the next two weeks, as well as her 29th birthday, at the QEH and the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre (QEII) in Halifax to receive a diagnosis of having two forms of Congenital Heart Disease. On February 5, 2021, Santina underwent Open Heart Surgery at the QEII in Halifax. It has been a year and Santina is sharing her story to inform people about heart disease, heart-healthy living, and signs of a heart attack.
The Buddhist nuns at Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (GWBI)
The Buddhist nuns at Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (GWBI) have called PEI home since 2012. With its serene and quiet environment, as well as kind and friendly neighbours, PEI has been the perfect place for the Buddhist nuns to practice their faith. The Buddhist nuns devote their time living a mindful way of life focusing on gratitude, positive thinking, and self-discipline. They study the teachings of compassion and wisdom and believe in living in harmony with nature. The nuns will be sharing their experiences as newcomers to the Island.
