The Great Cinnamon Roll Challenge - “Crowning a cinnamon roll champion is serious business” states newly minted WI member and organizer Dolores Griffin. Island bakers are asked to submit their best six cinnamon rolls to the Culinary Institute of Canada in Charlottetown on September 26th. The public are also invited to enjoy a delicious cinnamon roll while judging takes place, compliments of the Culinary Institute of Canada. Historian Dutch Thompson will entertain with stories from Bygone Days during the 2-4pm afternoon event. Sponsors include PEIWI, Dairy Farmers of PEI, ADL and Canada’s Food Island.
Advance registration is appreciated though PEIWI’s website and participants may enter any or all three categories including traditional cinnamon roll (with yeast), traditional Cinnamon roll (non-yeast), and alternative (any leavening agent, shape, flavor, flour, or add-in permitted). Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 are up for grabs in each category. A Grand Champion will also be determined. Entries can be dropped off on September 26th between 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. at the Culinary Institute of Canada.
The Great Cinnamon Roll Challenge is not just about the best cinnamon roll. It is a nod to cultural heritage in communities accompanying the sheer joy of baking. In collaborating with organizer Dolores Griffin, she points out “cinnamon rolls are a testament to the unlimited possibilities of culinary creativity and the enduring love for this sweet, swirled pastry. It is a symbol of shared experiences and the sweetness of creating community connection. It is a wonderful way to connect Islanders in a sweet and delicious manner.” WI President Carolyn MacFadyen affirms cinnamon rolls are a part of our Island heritage and looks forward to home bakers vying for bragging rights and prizes. To cap off the significance of this baking delicacy, the province has proclaimed October 4th as Cinnamon Roll Day in Prince Edward Island.
